Smena specimen from ParaType

A display typeface drawn from Soviet-era calligraphic lettering of the 1940s–70s, originally designed by Vladimir Pavlikov between 1999 and 2001.

About

Smena is rooted in the 'calligraphic style' popular in mid-twentieth-century Soviet graphics, where hand-lettered forms appeared in logos, magazine headlines, posters and signage. Pavlikov's design captures that informal, pen-influenced character across three weights: Light, Medium and Bold. ParaType licensed the face in 2006 and added it to their own library.

Classification

A display typeface rooted in mid-twentieth-century Soviet calligraphic lettering traditions, used for headlines, posters and signage. Its informal, hand-influenced character places it firmly in the display category with a calligraphic subcategory.
