A Cyrillic text serif originally drawn at Polygraphmash between 1960 and 1974 for the Bol'shaya Sovetskaya Entsiklopedia, digitised and extended by ParaType in 2008.
About
Designed by Nikolai Kudryashev and Zinaida Maslennikova for the Large Soviet Encyclopedia, the face was built for the demands of continuous small-text setting across vast reference volumes. Natalia Vasilyeva's 2008 digital revision expanded the character set and refined the design for contemporary use. Six styles cover Normal, Semibold and Bold with matching italics.
Classification
A text serif designed specifically for dense encyclopaedic setting, with characteristics suited to small sizes and high-volume body copy. Its origins in Soviet institutional type design place it in a tradition of utilitarian, legibility-focused Latin-adjacent Cyrillic typography.
