Kharms Display

ParaType · Ilya Buravchikov

displaydisplay serif
Kharms Display specimen from ParaType

A Cyrillic-rooted display serif drawn from Soviet book-cover lettering of the early twentieth century, with beak-shaped serifs, sharp elongated legs and a reverse-contrast И.

About

Inspired by title lettering on Soviet book covers from the first half of the twentieth century, the typeface carries deliberately rough, strong serifs alongside refined details: elongated sharp legs in R, K, Ж and Я, triangular forms in Л, Д, M, and a dynamically tilted counter in round letters. The reverse contrast applied to И acts as a typographic nod to the literary world of Daniil Kharms, the absurdist poet whose name – hovering between the English 'harm' and the French 'charme' – gives the face its defining tension. The result sits between savage and elegant, making it most effective at display sizes for editorial, branding and poster work.

Classification

A decorative serif with strong idiosyncratic detailing – beak-shaped serifs, elongated sharp legs and reverse contrast in select letters – placing it firmly in the display category rather than a conventional text serif tradition.
