Bad Russian

ParaType · Maria Kasatkina, Dmitry Goloub · 2020

displaydisplay serif
Bad Russian specimen from ParaType

A single-weight display serif reviving the eccentric letterforms of Soviet publication typefaces from the 1930s, with flame-shaped details, triangular Л and Д, and peculiar serifs on C, G, S and З.

About

Designed by Maria Kasatkina in 2020 and expanded by Dmitry Goloub in 2022, the typeface draws directly from Soviet periodicals such as Architecture of the USSR and publications of the Politikatorzhan Publishing House. Characteristic features include a looped У, closed lettershapes with elongated serifs and flame-shaped ornamental elements that recall the visual language of 1930s Constructivist design. Despite its historical specificity, the face is intended for contemporary display use, supported by ligatures, currency signs and broad Latin and Cyrillic language coverage.

Classification

A display serif drawing on Soviet-era cover typeface conventions of the 1930s, with distinctive historical letterform details such as triangular Л and Д, flame-shaped elements and elongated serifs. Its ornamental character and single-weight caps-oriented design place it firmly in the display category.
