A monospaced dot-matrix typeface built on a 5×7 grid, distinguished by deliberately overlapping dots that fuse horizontal strokes while retaining vertical separation, producing an unusually textured mechanical rhythm.
About
Designed by Laura Csocsán and first sketched in November 2022, Theran originated from a thermo-printed back cover bearing an unidentified dot-matrix face with an overlapping grid structure. The family spans nine static weights from Hair to Black, plus a variable format for continuous interpolation, with lighter cuts reading as refined and understated and heavier weights collapsing the grid into dense, graphic forms. A bespoke OpenType feature generates automatic word-border outlines resembling speech bubbles, and the 1,998-glyph set covers 211 languages.
Classification
Theran is explicitly monospaced and built on a 5×7 dot-matrix grid, placing it squarely in the mono category with a dot-matrix subcategory distinct from conventional grotesque or geometric mono designs.
