Maurice
Monkey Type · Mitch Paone · 2022

A pure geometric sans-serif with nine weights, matching italics and Cyrillic coverage, whose strict grid-driven construction is tempered by a suite of stylistic alternates and a deliberately approachable texture.
About
Maurice is built on an uncompromising geometric skeleton – square proportions, maximum order, no optical fudging – yet reads as warm rather than cold, with its brutalist instincts offset by careful spacing and a broad set of stylistic alternates. Nine weights from Thin to Black each pair with a true italic, giving the family real range across text and display applications. Latin and Cyrillic coverage extends its reach into multilingual European work.
Classification
Strict geometric sans-serif built on a pure grid, square proportions, minimal optical correction. Design intention described as brutalist but approachable – hard geometry softened by considered stylistic alternates and balanced spacing. No humanist compromise in the skeleton; warmth comes from detailing rather than form.
