Grad started as Phil Martin's early-90s reworking of Century Schoolbook, done by hand-editing bitmapped fonts on a DOS PC and adding features like small caps, old-style figures, ligatures and swash capitals. Simonson later worked with Martin to bring the design into a modern three-style OpenType family.
