Makahiya specimen from Jad Maza

A variable typeface whose single axis maps the folding and opening motion of Mimosa pudica's touch-sensitive leaves onto letterform structure.

About

Released in 2023, Makahiya takes its name and concept directly from the Mimosa pudica plant, known for closing its leaves when touched. A variable font axis moves letterforms between three states – Closed, Halfway and Open – replicating the plant's characteristic motion. The result is a typeface whose visual identity is inseparable from its mechanism, making the variable technology itself the subject rather than a technical convenience.

Classification

An experimental display typeface using variable font axes to simulate the leaf-closing motion of Mimosa pudica, placing it firmly in the display/experimental category with no conventional subcategory equivalent.
