Finlandica
Helsinki Type Studio · Niklas Ekholm, Juho Hiilivirta, Jaakko Suomalainen

The official national typeface of Finland, commissioned by the Prime Minister's Office and designed with rounded geometries and deliberate inktrap details that echo Finnish craftsmanship.
About
Finlandica balances formal proportions with a warm, approachable character drawn from rounded geometries and subtle inktraps described by the designers as cuts made by a blunt axe. Originally commissioned for the promotion of Finland abroad, it has since become the default typeface for many government offices. Released as open source and available via Google Fonts and GitHub, it reflects the Finnish concept of jokaisenoikeus – universal access – applied to typography.
Classification
A geometric sans with rounded forms and sharp inktraps, balancing formal structure with approachable warmth; the inktraps and deliberate imperfections give it a humanist edge within an otherwise clean geometric framework.
