Kaligari
Franziska Weitgruber · Franziska Weitgruber

A display typeface born from expressionist art and analogue form-finding, developed as a final project at the Type and Media master course in Den Haag.
About
Kaligari draws on the naive, raw quality of letterforms found in expressionist artwork, addressing what its designer sees as an unsatisfactory relationship between art and typography in museum contexts. Its letter shapes emerged from analogue experiments rather than digital construction, giving the typeface an irregular, hand-wrought character. The result is a typeface positioned to sit comfortably alongside expressionist visual material.
Classification
A display typeface rooted in analogue experimentation and expressionist art, with letter forms deriving from non-digital form-finding processes rather than conventional typographic traditions.
