About
Proto Grotesk traces its lineage to Breite Halbfette Grotesque (Bauer & Co, 1883) and the earlier American Gothic No. 1 and 2, preserving details such as the goateed G, curved leg on the R and the directional t with a baseline-hugging stem. Its low x-height and high stroke contrast make it particularly well suited to display setting, where the oval counters of the bolder weights swell prominently. Despite its eccentricities it remains legible across a range of applications, from large editorial headlines to restrained body text.
Classification
A sans-serif with 19th-century grotesque roots, drawing direct inspiration from Breite Halbfette Grotesque (Bauer & Co, 1883) and earlier American Gothic designs. Combines low x-height, vertical stress and characteristic grotesque eccentricities with a geometric sensibility.
