Exocet specimen from Emigre

Jonathan Barnbrook's 1991 typeface draws on ancient uncial and runic letterforms to produce an angular, archaic display face in three weights.

About

Designed for Emigre in 1991, Exocet takes its visual cues from pre-Roman inscription styles, resulting in letterforms that feel carved rather than drawn. The three weights – Light, Medium and Heavy – retain the same angular, primitive character across their range. It became associated with video game and heavy metal aesthetics during the 1990s, testament to its striking, otherworldly presence.

Classification

Exocet draws on ancient uncial and runic letterforms, giving it a primitive, archaic character entirely distinct from conventional Latin type categories. Its angular, stone-carved quality places it firmly in the display category.
