Eckmania specimen from Double Zero

A contemporary revival of Otto Eckmann's 1900 Eckmannschrift, drawing on a range of historical sources rather than a single specimen to span six weights from Thin to Black.

About

Originally designed by Otto Eckmann with punches cut by Louis Hoell and published by the Rudhardsche foundry under Karl Klingspor, Eckmannschrift is a cornerstone of German Jugendstil typography. This revival departs from prior digitisations by synthesising multiple source materials to broaden the typeface's tonal range, making it serviceable across contemporary contexts while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original. OpenType alternates for 'a' and 'H' give users additional control over the letter's calligraphic character.

Classification

A digital revival of Otto Eckmann's 1900 Eckmannschrift, which sits firmly in the Jugendstil tradition – organic, calligraphic letterforms with Art Nouveau character distinct from conventional roman or gothic classifications. The display category reflects its decorative, historically rooted nature.
