Sahar Afshar's Arabic extension of the Fit family spans 10 widths via a variable font axis, with letterforms drawn from Square Kufi calligraphy and engineered so that white space within and between letters remains constant regardless of width.
About
Commissioned by David Jonathan Ross and conceived as part of the multi-script Fit family, Fit Arabic adapts the defining principle of the original 2017 design to the Arabic script: counter space and letter spacing are held fixed while the width of each glyph stretches from Skyline to Ultra Extended. The design draws primarily on Square Kufi, with its sharp, rectilinear forms and horizontal orientation, while introducing selective curves and diagonals to aid legibility. It supports 21 Arabic-script languages including Standard Arabic, Iranian Persian, Urdu and Central Kurdish.
Classification
A variable-width display typeface rooted in Square Kufi calligraphy, designed around a fixed white-space system across 10 widths from Skyline to Ultra Extended. Its rectilinear, space-filling geometry and explicit display-only intent place it firmly in the display category.
