A detached stencil display family rooted in Primary Kufic calligraphy, conceived to bridge CNC-milled wood type and digital letterpress traditions across Arabic and Latin scripts.
About
Originally drawn in 2017 for a physical wood typeface at the Typografische Werkplaats Amsterdam, Kanat takes its structural logic from early Kufic script, with fully detached letterforms that accommodate the rectangular block constraints of moveable type. The family comprises three styles: Solid, Outline (designed for overlay with Solid) and Press, which replicates the warmth and texture of its wooden counterpart. Intended for use at 48pt and above, it covers Arabic, Persian, Urdu and Latin.
Classification
A detached stencil display typeface rooted in Primary Kufic calligraphy, designed explicitly for large-scale use and letterpress compatibility. Its rectangular, fully detached letterforms place it firmly in the display category with a stencil subcategory.
