Paul Barnes's stencil display face, rooted in Renaissance letterforms and worn gravestone lettering, extended to Arabic script by Bahman Eslami with assistance from Maryam Golpayegani.
About
Originally drawn from the visual language of gravestone inscriptions and shipping crate lettering, Dala Floda pairs Renaissance elegance with the graphic economy of a stencil construction. The Arabic expansion, nearly a decade in the making, grew from a 2017 Arabic translation of the Commercial Type logotype and brings the same graphic simplification to Arabic, Kurdish, Persian and Urdu. Latin glyphs have been optically adjusted to harmonise with the Arabic script across the combined family.
Classification
A Renaissance-rooted stencil letterform with elegant proportions derived from gravestone and crate lettering, extended here to the Arabic script. The stencil construction and calligraphic origins place it firmly in the display category.
