Lara Captan's 2026 geometric Arabic text family applies a low-contrast grotesque sensibility to the Naskh ductus, spanning nine weights across more than 32 Arabic-script languages.
About
Named after the plural of 'zīj', the historical astronomical tables used by Islamic scholars, Azyaj asks how geometry can be achieved in Arabic without erasing the proportional identity of Naskh or the distinct character of the many languages written in Arabic script. Nine weights from Thin to Black cover Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Kurdish, Uyghur and over two dozen further languages. OpenType features include discretionary ligatures, swash characters, alternate medial Heh and horizontal variants of Hah, Ain and Meem.
Classification
A low-contrast geometric typeface for Arabic script, explicitly described as a minimal 'grotesque' approach to Arabic, maintaining Naskh ductus while abstracting script heritage into a contemporary, geometric form.
