A seven-weight Hebrew typeface rooted in the classical Ashkenazi Gothic letterform tradition, tracing its lineage from 15th-century Eastern European scribal writing through the 1526 Prague Haggadah to contemporary use.
About
Designed by Avraham Cornfeld and released in 2023, Levi reworks the Ashkenazi Gothic Hebrew script – associated with the scribe Yoel Ben-Shimon and later Gershon Cohen's Prague Haggadah – into a modern family spanning seven weights from Ultralight to Ultrabold. The typeface includes Latin uppercase characters with support for 218 languages, diacritical marks, and a range of OpenType features including discretionary ligatures, stylistic alternates and swashes. It includes full Hebrew nikud (vowel pointing) and Yiddish-specific letterforms.
Classification
Levi draws directly from the classical Ashkenazi Gothic Hebrew letterform tradition, tracing its lineage to 15th-century Eastern European scribal writing and the 1526 Prague Haggadah. The design modernises these historical forms into a structured, upright Hebrew serif with clear gothic structural references.
