A four-weight grotesque by Juliette Collin, drawing on the 1922 Antique Warnery no.1 specimen and updating its vigorous, high-contrast strokes for contemporary use.
About
Salmanazar traces its lineage to nineteenth-century French type design, bringing an unusual stroke contrast and asymmetrical counters that set it apart from neutral grotesques. Its slightly heavy weights and vertical proportions lend a certain darkness suited to continuous reading as well as display use. The family spans four weights with corresponding italics, each weight behaving with a subtly different character.
Classification
Rooted in nineteenth-century French grotesque type, specifically the Antique Warnery no.1 specimen of 1922. Its unusual stroke contrast, asymmetrical counters and industrial character place it firmly in the grotesque tradition, with affinities to American gothics such as Franklin Gothic.
