A 20-style sans-serif by Damien Gautier drawn from the heterogeneous letterforms of French enamel street nameplates, organised across six width series from very narrow to extra-wide.
About
Rather than smoothing its sources into uniformity, Plaax deliberately preserves the typographic disparity of the nameplates that inspired it, with each of the six series retaining independent details in accents and specific letters such as f, g, j, k, r, t and y. The family spans very narrow to extra-wide proportions in a structure loosely reminiscent of Frutiger's Univers grid, yielding 20 styles suited to press, publishing, signage and identity work. Street-name ligatures are accessible via the OpenType ligatures feature.
Classification
A monolinear sans-serif derived from the elementary, industrially drawn letterforms found on French enamel street nameplates. The forms are deliberately unsmoothed and retain the disparity of their vernacular source, placing the family within an industrial grotesque tradition rather than a refined geometric or humanist lineage.
