A modular variable typeface in 62 styles, built on circle and square primitives across six transformation axes derived from Jacques Bertin's cartographic theory of visual variables.
About
Designed by Roman Seban and published in 2023, the family divides into two sub-families – Bertin Dot and Bertin Square – sharing identical metrics but differing in their base module. Six transformation styles per family (Size, Shape, Value, Multi, Rotation, Orientation) are exposed through variable font axes, allowing continuous interpolation between states. Because all glyphs maintain consistent metrics regardless of axis setting, layers of differently styled text can be overlaid to compound visual effects.
Classification
A rigorously constructed modular display typeface built from two geometric primitives – circle and square – across six transformation styles per family. Its conceptual basis in information theory and cartographic visual variables places it firmly in the experimental/display category.
