Simon Renaud's 2023 type design reconciles legibility with radical departures from Roman and Carolingian letterform conventions, drawing on uncials, cryptography and early geometric sans experiments.
About
Augure blends historical Latin forms – including uncials – with shapes borrowed from cryptography and digital rationality, building letterforms from elementary geometric combinations that recall early twentieth-century experiments. Three stylistic sets (classic, eclectic, cryptic) and an extended palette of alternate glyphs give the designer considerable control over how far the type strays from convention. Seven weights from Thin to Black are complemented by slanted cuts and a variable font spanning both weight and slant axes, totalling 14 styles plus one variable.
Classification
Augure combines geometric sans construction with influences from uncial scripts, cryptography and digital rationality, producing letterforms that depart significantly from conventional Latin canon. Its three stylistic sets and alternate glyphs push it firmly into the experimental display category.
