Velvelyne
Typothèque Bye Bye Binary · Manon Van der Borght, Mariel Nils · 2023

A four-weight sans-serif grown from Liberation Sans via an algorithmic skeleton script, developed by Manon Van der Borght and Mariel Nils for the Velvetyne website and released under a CUTE licence.
About
The typeface's skeleton was generated by a script conceived by Raphaël Bastide and developed by Benjamin Dumond, with Van der Borght and Nils then shaping the resulting forms into a family of four weights with post-binary ligatures. Produced under the auspices of the Bye Bye Binary collective, it reflects a specifically queer typographic practice attentive to non-binary language conventions. A letterpress workshop using laser-cut stamps of the typeface was held at La Générale, Paris, in October 2024.
Classification
Derived from Liberation Sans via an algorithmic skeleton script, the letterforms have been hand-developed into a humanist sans with distinctive organic excrescences and post-binary ligatures, placing it in the humanist sans tradition with experimental flourishes.
