Jakob Runge's 2016 geometric sans pairs sharp-edged construction with wide apertures and a duplex design, making it equally suited to branding and interface work.
About
Urby combines strictly geometric construction with dynamic, active shapes – wide apertures in letters like 'a', 'e' and 's', organic stroke endings in 'v' and 'x', and reduced forms in 't', 'f' and '4' give the family a distinctive personality. All five weights share identical character widths, a duplex approach that prevents text reflow when switching weights, which is particularly useful in interface design. A companion family, Urby Soft, replaces the sharp edges with rounded corners while remaining interchangeable across weights.
Classification
A geometric sans with reduced, constructed letterforms and wide apertures. The tension between dynamic shapes and strict geometric construction places it firmly in the geometric sans tradition, with expressive details that push it toward display use.
