Signal specimen from type.today

A revival and extension of Caractères, the official French road-sign alphabet first standardised in 1946, expanded by Production Type into a full typographic system including a monospace subfamily.

About

Signal completes what the original four incomplete Caractères styles left unfinished, adding roman lowercases across four weights with matching italics, a comprehensive accent set for multilingual use, arrows, pictograms and mathematical characters. Signal Mono extends the system into a strict monospaced cut suited to data visualisation, timetables and technical documents. Cyrillic support was developed by Hugues Gentile in consultation with Ilya Ruderman and Yury Ostromentsky of CSTM Fonts.

Classification

Derived from Caractères, the standardised French road signage alphabet, Signal sits within the late-modernist geometric sans tradition. Its uniform stroke weight, open apertures and administrative rigour align it with functional grotesques of the mid-twentieth century rather than humanist or neo-grotesque models.
