A digital revival of the eighteenth-century Spanish types cut by Geronimo Gil, developed by Mário Feliciano over more than a decade into a six-weight family with roman and italic for book and magazine use.
About
Feliciano drew from Gil's 1787 specimen 'Muestras de los Nuevos Punzones y Matrices', preserving the idiosyncratic features of those types – reduced stroke contrast, generous x-height and characteristically short ascenders and descenders that produce a rolling rhythm in text. The design retains specific quirks such as the J and U while extending Gil's range into bolder weights that Gil never produced. The result sits between old-style and transitional, with a Dutch flavour: before Gil's generation, most important Spanish books were printed in Dutch types.
Classification
An eighteenth-century Spanish revival rooted in the types of Geronimo Gil, combining old-style lowercase characteristics with reduced contrast and a generous x-height – qualities that place it between humanist and transitional territory rather than fully in either camp.
