Gerrit Noordzij's digital revival of the Burgundian Bastarda, tracing its origins directly to 15th-century manuscript scripts from the workshop of Jacquemart Pilavaine rather than to the early Bruges typefaces.
About
The design draws on the elongated Bastarda scripts produced in Bergen (Hainaut) around 1450, sources that predate and stand apart from the Caxton and Mansion typeface tradition. Noordzij first applied a photographic version of the design in a folio commission for the Scherpe printing office in Krefeld in 1983. The family is issued in four tonal variants grouped into blond and dark bundles, giving the face a range suited to different printing conditions and weights.
Classification
A Burgundian Bastarda revival derived directly from 15th-century manuscript sources rather than early typeface precedents. The design follows the elongated letterforms of the Burgundian scribal tradition closely, with four variants spanning a blond-to-dark tonal range.
