Obskur traces back to Fred Lullack's 1940 lettering and handwriting manual, which showed how letterforms could be drawn on a background grid using a hole-punch tool. Studio Sascha Bente carries that brutal, punched texture into the digital version, adding lowercase letters and a full working character set that the source material never had.
