Superlumina
Studio Buchanan · Jonny Gibson · 2021

A variable unicase gothic rooted in old headline and poster gothics, with nine weights and italics, emerging from an experiment into weight, width and counter-size relationships.
About
Superlumina grew out of an investigation into what happens when counter sizes and letter spacing remain consistent as weight and width vary across a design space. The unicase lowercase set softens the density of the forms, creating a texture of curved minuscules against angular capitals that avoids the monotony of an all-caps setting. The result is a modern take on a historically familiar display classification, suited to sci-fi, poster and street-wear contexts.
Classification
A unicase variable sans-serif with strong poster and headline gothic references. Its uniform counter sizes and dense massing across weight and width axes give it a display character that separates it from functional text grotesques.
