Part of the Sharp Earth multi-script superfamily, the Japanese edition covers hiragana, katakana, and kanji across a six-weight variable font ranging from Thin to ExtraBold. The design avoids strict genre classification, drawing across the sans-serif tradition to prioritise warmth, pragmatism, and utility, with proportions calibrated to sit harmoniously alongside the Latin, Arabic, Devanagari, and Thai members of the same family. Two years of collaborative work involved type directors Calvin Kwok and Klio Peng alongside kana and kanji specialists, with script consultants from Realtype and Oryzae.
