A musical notation typeface designed by Eugene Yukechev in 2020, developed alongside a manual typesetting method that allows publishers and engravers to set music notation using non-compound symbols for the first time in the digital era.
About
Rufus was created in conjunction with a unique engraving method developed by Savva Terentyev, and together they form the basis of the Manual Engraving Series of piano editions. The typeface integrates the graphic vocabulary of Yukechev's companion text face Casus into traditional music symbols, producing a cohesive typographic unity between text and notation. A modular grid derived from the music stave's spacing underpins the design system, with the Fibonacci sequence informing page format, type size and leading.
Classification
Rufus is a specialist musical notation typeface designed to work in conjunction with Latin text typography, integrating traditional music symbols with letterform aesthetics derived from the companion typeface Casus. It does not fit standard text or display categories but is closest to display as a purpose-built symbolic/notational system.
