A 2024 display serif by Márton Hegedűs in which every glyph is built entirely from straight lines at preset angles, reinterpreting old-style serif proportions without a single curve.
About
Nyman takes the structural vocabulary of old-style serifs – weight distribution, stroke modulation, serif bracketing – and translates it into a strictly rectilinear system where curves are eliminated entirely. Five weights from Thin to Bold each have a matching italic, giving the family ten styles in total. The concept frames itself as a comment on cultural continuity: the constraints of the construction standing in for the difficulty of carrying tradition forward into unfamiliar formal territory.
Classification
Nyman is classified as a display typeface because its defining constraint – all glyphs constructed entirely from straight lines at preset angles, with no curves – prioritises visual concept over text-setting utility. Old-style serif proportions are referenced, but the angular construction places it firmly in the display/experimental category.
