A trio of grotesques by Ellmer Stefan distilled from 19th-century French and Swiss wood type Antiques, keeping the crude, unpolished quirks of the originals on purpose.
About
Following Éric Nunes's research, Compagnie draws on wood type from E. Ploquin, Martin & Coderey, Bonnet & Cie. and Gaston Dubosc, and turns the raw output of industrial production into a deliberate aesthetic: no overshoots, no optical correction and the odd collision with the edge of an imaginary block. The three styles share a name rather than a system, from a condensed I through to a wide, heavy III, and work best set against each other. A long list of stylistic sets, including idiotic ball terminals, shy and touching terminals, a single-storey a and a noseless 1, lets you choose how strange it gets.
Classification
Three grotesques digested from French and Swiss wood type Antiques of the second half of the 19th century. No overshoots, no optical compensation and strong contrasts between the three styles push it from sans-serif into display.
