A Bitstream-derived revival of Karl-Erik Forsberg's Berling (1951), extended with a Cyrillic version by Manvel Shmavonyan for ParaType in 2008.
About
Originally drawn for the Swedish Berling foundry in 1951, the face features a small x-height and ascenders that rise above the capitals – hallmarks of old-style roman design. Despite comparatively high stroke contrast for the genre, it remains well-suited to continuous text in books and journals as well as to display settings. The Cyrillic addition broadens its usefulness for Russian-language publishing.
Classification
An old-style roman with higher contrast than typical old-style faces, small x-height, and ascenders exceeding cap height – classic characteristics of the humanist serif tradition. The Cyrillic extension was developed by Manvel Shmavonyan for ParaType in 2008.
