New Journal specimen from ParaType

A Soviet-era text and display serif, originally drawn at Polygraphmash in 1963 and digitalised at ParaType in 1997, distinguished by stems that taper downwards.

About

Designed by Michael Rovensky in 1963 at the Polygraphmash type design bureau, New Journal was brought into digital form by Lyubov Kuznetsova at ParaType in 1997. Its defining characteristic is the downward taper of the stems, lending the face an unusual decorative quality while remaining functional for text setting. The family covers four styles: Book, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic.

Classification

A text and display serif with stems tapering downwards, giving it a distinctive decorative character suited to editorial and display use. Its Soviet-era origins and ornamental qualities place it outside conventional serif subcategories.
