A 2014 redesign of a 1940s Soviet geometric sans, drawing on Erbar Grotesk and Metro Sans with six styles including Display and Inline cuts.
About
The original Journal Sans was developed between 1940 and 1956 under Anatoly Shchukin, itself derived from Jacob Erbar's Erbar Grotesk and William Dwiggins's Metro Sans. Maria Selezeneva led the contemporary redesign with Alexandra Korolkova, producing six styles that span body text, display and inline applications. Cyrillic and Greek coverage reflects the typeface's Soviet heritage and its continued relevance for multilingual publishing.
Classification
Geometric sans-serif rooted in Jacob Erbar's Erbar Grotesk and William Dwiggins's Metro Sans, channelled through a mid-20th-century Soviet design tradition. The family includes a Display and Inline cut alongside the text styles, confirming its dual text and display scope.
