Astern

Monokrom · Frode Helland · 2026

displayengraved display
Astern specimen from Monokrom

An engraver's monoline display face from Telemark's industrial past, made to bend along curves.

About

Astern takes its shapes from brass plaques and old engraved signage and keeps their thin, even stroke. It comes in Normal, Smile and Frown, and an open-source typesetter sets it on curves for badges, seals and circular lockups. The character set is small, so keep it to short Nordic or English display lines.

Classification

Monoline letters modelled on machine-age brass lettering and engraving patterns, built to be set on curves. Three variants (Normal, Smile and Frown). Limited character set: 120 glyphs, basic Latin with a handful of Nordic and German accents (Å, Æ, Ø, Ä, Ü, É, È, Ô, Ò) and no wider Latin Extended coverage.
