A variable display typeface by Federico Parra Barrios that simulates the shifting shadows of stone engraving through two axes controlling the angle and intensity of incident light.
About
Hour uses interplays of raster patterns at varying values to create the illusion of chiselled depth within the constraints of Bézier curves, producing letters that appear to contain grey tones despite being drawn entirely in black. Its two variable axes are named 'hour' (0–12, controlling the sun's angle around the letterforms like a sundial) and 'okta' (0–800, borrowed from meteorological cloud-cover measurement, modulating light intensity). Designed with motion design in mind, it produces an effectively infinite range of engraving states across 12 named styles and 4 variable fonts.
Classification
Hour simulates lapidary stone engraving through variable raster patterns rather than conventional stroke construction, placing it firmly in the display category. Its illusion of chiselled depth and shifting light makes it a highly specialised display face with no conventional weight axis.
