Martin Majoor's best-known book serif, a sturdy Dutch humanist face with small caps, old-style figures and a lively italic.
About
Scala was drawn in 1989 for the Vredenburg music centre in Utrecht and became FontShop's first serious text family on the FontFont label. Its low contrast and dark colour keep thin strokes from breaking up in small print, and the bold sets on the same widths as the regular, so a word can change weight without reflowing a line. In 2013 the Design Museum in London named it one of fifty typefaces that changed the world.
Classification
Dutch humanist serif with low contrast, a dark even colour and short, flat bracketed serifs that give it a stern, almost brutalist take on 16th-century models. The italic has long, rhythmic serifs. The bold keeps the regular's character widths. Shares its skeleton with Scala Sans.
