Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club specimen from K-Type

A digital revival of Joe Ephgrave's hand-painted 1967 lettering from the Beatles' Sgt Pepper bass drum, extended into a full character set with outline variants for bicolour effects.

About

The original letterforms were painted by fairground artist Joe Ephgrave in March 1967 in what he described as a 'futuristic' art deco style. K-Type has completed the uppercase, added a lowercase, and built a character set of over 400 glyphs. Two additional outline fonts share matching spacing and kerning, allowing bicolour layering, with the lowercase slot used to deliver the more condensed 'Lonely Hearts' inline style from the drum's centre band.

Classification

A decorative display typeface in an art deco style, hand-lettered in origin and revived digitally. The fairground-painted letterforms place it firmly in the display category, with geometric art deco characteristics and a 'futuristic' aesthetic as described by the original artist.
