About
Released in 2024, Amakan draws its visual logic directly from amakan weaving, the split-bamboo matting used as wall material in Philippine vernacular architecture. Three subfamilies — Nipa, Buri and Piña — each offer three structural variants: Strips, Stripes and Sheet, varying the density and character of the weave pattern within the type. The result is a typeface rooted in material craft rather than typographic convention.
Classification
A decorative display typeface built from geometric weave patterns rather than conventional calligraphic or structural letterform traditions. Diagonal, zigzag and diamond motifs derived from woven bamboo matting define the letterforms throughout.
