Englisch specimen from Interval Type

A high-contrast display family that channels the eccentric energy of Fell Types and Caslon into something unmistakably contemporary, with six weights and matching italics across 12 styles.

About

Designed by Ilya Naumoff at Paris-based Interval Type, Englisch takes 17th and 18th century English typography – Fell Types and Caslon chief among its references – as a starting point rather than a destination. The result is a display family with real vertical contrast and open forms that read confidently at large sizes, inflected with a deliberate rhythmic eccentricity that keeps it from feeling like a revival. It won a TDC award in 2022, and the recognition feels earned.

Classification

Contemporary display family drawing on 17th and 18th century English sources – Fell Types and Caslon are the primary references. High vertical contrast and open forms are carried through a modern expressive lens rather than as a strict revival. The eccentricity is intentional and controlled, not incidental.
