Paris-based designer Ilya Naumoff's geometric display sans in five weights, drawing on the rationalist legacy of the Ulm School of Design with optically monolinear strokes and idiosyncratic capital forms.
About
Released in 2018, Ulm Grotesk takes its name from the West German design school that positioned itself as the Bauhaus's intellectual successor. Distinctive details include a wide 'J', spurless lowercase arches, sweeping tails on 'g' and 'y', and capital forms on 'A', 'V', 'W' and 'Y' that echo NASA's 1970s worm logotype. The family is designed specifically for display use, and its simplified, monolinear construction gives it a markedly futuristic quality.
Classification
A geometric display sans with optically monolinear strokes and a high-modernist aesthetic referencing the Bauhaus lineage; classified as display due to its explicit design intent for large-size use and its markedly simplified, futuristic character forms.
