A single-weight monolinear script with a steep slope, geometric construction and automatic swash substitution via OpenType features.
About
Designed by Diana Ovezea and Sabina Chipară and released in 2019, Akin pairs geometric letter forms with straight sides and a condensed proportion, evoking a retro aesthetic that sits somewhere between the 1950s and 1990s without anchoring itself to either. Its OpenType logic handles swashes contextually, reading surrounding characters in both directions to insert sweeping strokes above or below neighbouring letters without colliding with capitals, ascenders or descenders. Final-form substitutions and extensive alternates round out its technical palette, making it well-suited to display and branding work.
Classification
A monolinear, condensed script with geometric construction and steep slope. The even stroke weight and lack of calligraphic variation place it firmly in the monolinear script category rather than a brush or pen-based style.
