Eleven rough-edged hand-drawn display fonts from 1995, referencing bathroom-stall graffiti, notebook doodling and chalkboard scribbles, accompanied by a sketchy Household Items illustration set.
About
Released by House Industries in 1995, the Scrawl collection comprises eleven stylistically distinct faces spanning carved lettering, chalk script, block lettering and barely-legible scrawl, plus a Householditems dingbat font. The deliberately irregular outlines demanded so many data points that the fonts famously crashed printers and locked up systems until hardware caught up around 1999. Each subfamily carries a 'house' suffix in its name, giving the collection a self-aware, irreverent identity consistent with House Industries' approach during that era.
Classification
A collection of intentionally rough, hand-drawn display faces referencing graffiti, notebook doodling and chalkboard scribbles. The jagged, organic outlines and deliberately unsophisticated letterforms place it firmly in the display/handwritten category rather than a formal script.
