Kiperman specimen from Harbor Type

A compact text serif in four styles, commissioned by Brazilian publisher Grupo A in honour of its founder, with a true calligraphic italic rather than a sloped roman.

About

Designed by Henrique Beier and Ana Laydner and released in December 2018, Kiperman was commissioned by Grupo A to honour Henrique Leão Kiperman, who founded the Artmed publishing house. Its proportions run slightly narrower than typical text serifs, improving setting efficiency without sacrificing reading comfort. The italic, drawn independently at an 8° slope, carries a calligraphic quality that distinguishes it from a simple oblique. The family won awards at Tipos Latinos 9, the 13th Biennial of Brazilian Graphic Design and Hiii Typography 2018.

Classification

A text-optimised serif with slightly narrow proportions and a true italic at 8°, designed for long-form reading with no decorative excess. Its calligraphic italic structure places it in the humanist serif tradition.
