A variable grotesk in four widths, drawn from Venus Grotesk (1907) and deliberately preserving the uneven proportions and shifting rhythm of that transitional era.
About
Designed by Marcus Gärde, Christoffer Granström and Anders Wikström, GD Grio moves between standard, Narrow, Extra Narrow and Condensed widths across four weights via a single variable font file. Its reference point, the Bauer Type Foundry's Venus Grotesk of 1907, informs curious terminals and subtly irregular proportions that distinguish it from more neutralised contemporary grotesks. The result sits comfortably at text sizes while carrying enough character to assert itself at display scale.
Classification
A grotesk revival inspired by Venus Grotesk (1907, Bauer Type Foundry), retaining the uneven proportions and curious terminals characteristic of the transitional era between 19th-century eccentricity and 20th-century rationalism.
