James specimen from Eliott Grunewald

A unicase capitals-only typeface in Regular and Stencil cuts, drawn from hand-lettered type on a 1970 Afro-American music album cover and released by Eliott Grunewald in 2022.

About

The source lettering dates from 1970 yet reads as entirely contemporary, with proportions that shift dramatically from very narrow to very wide, lending strong rhythm to composed text. Geometric curves on letters such as S, C, U and O sit alongside diagonal connections in N, M and A that give the typeface a modular, digital quality. The Stencil variant pushes this further, assembling forms from cut-out modules in ways that feel genuinely unexpected for the style.

Classification

A unicase capitals-only display typeface with strikingly variable proportions – some letters very narrow, others very wide – and geometric curves inspired by hand-lettering on a 1970 album cover. Its modular stencil variant and 'digital' diagonal connections reinforce its display classification.
