sans-serifhumanist sansitalic
Preto Sans specimen from DizajnDesign

A sans-serif designed as the skeletal core of the Preto family, distinguished by tapered letter tops and uniform capital widths that produce a distinctive typographic texture.

About

Released in 2011, Preto Sans is part of a three-subfamily system alongside Preto Semi and Preto Serif, all calibrated to share equal grey value in text but differ in surface texture. The design features two text weights and two bold styles, each with a companion italic, alongside a thorough set of OpenType features including small caps, multiple figure styles and stylistic alternates. Uniform capital widths depart from traditional roman proportions, making the typeface particularly suited to contemporary identity and signage work.

Classification

A sans-serif with humanist tendencies, featuring tapered letterform details and uniform capital widths that distinguish it from orthodox grotesque models. The family's relationship to its serif and semi-serif siblings suggests a text-focused design with display applications.
