Astrid Grotesk

Dave Rowland Type · Dave Rowland

Astrid Grotesk specimen from Dave Rowland Type

A 40-style neo-grotesque with four widths and eight weights, designed as a warmer, slightly clunkier counterpart to the more eccentric Schizotype Grotesk.

About

Astrid Grotesk takes the Swiss grotesque template and softens it with deliberate clunkiness, avoiding the cold neutrality that characterises many neo-grots. Its four widths – Regular, Semi Condensed, Condensed and Extra Condensed – each span eight weights from Extra Light to Heavy, with italics in the Regular width. The condensed cuts have no italic, but the breadth of the family makes it a capable workhorse for branding and editorial work.

Classification

A neo-grotesque with deliberate warmth and mild eccentricity, positioned as a normalised companion to Schizotype Grotesk. Four widths across up to eight weights place it firmly in the Swiss-influenced grotesque tradition.
